Eco Fact Of The Week

The total mileage travelled per person has increased significantly since the mid 1980s. This is because, whilst the total number of trips made by people has remained fairly static, average trip lengths have increased by a quarter from 5.2 miles to 6.6 miles.

Hi,

loving the site.

I think the reason journeys are getting longer is because people are trying to move out of the cities and things because of the pollution, and trying to get back to the countryside. Of course they don't think about the pollution caused by then having to commute longer distances in the car!

Something that I've found is that car insurance companies have started rewarding drivers who try to keep mileage low and who drive more fuel efficient cars. They are also starting to offer 100% offset on the CO2 emissions produced by your car.
